The stone Villa
Who Are We?
The Stone Villa Inc. The Stone Villa Inc. is an artist run initiative affiliated with Marrickville council. As part of the expansion program for Kingsford Smith Airport, the Federal Airports Corporation deemed that houses within the 40 A.N.E.F. contour were too noisy for habitation. As a consequence many of the homes in Sydenham were demolished. Marrickville Council successfully lobbied the F.A.C. at the behest of local residents for the preservation of the Stone Villa because of its architectural significance. It was decided that the Stone Villa would be preserved for the use of the community, not for profit organizations. In 1997 Marrickville Council called for expressions of interest from non-profit, community based groups to tender a use for the Stone Villa at 19 Railway Rd Sydenham. The Stone Villa Inc. was formed to provide a use for the building as artists studios. Our aims were to preserve the building for future generations, provide studio space for practicing artists and conduct an artist in residence program on a rotational basis. In addition to this we are able to promote the work of local emerging and established artists through our annual exhibition at Chrissie Cotter Gallery as well as conduct art workshops with children at events such as the Australia Day Festival, Marrickville Festival and Feastability. We have also been involved in a number of community art projects in the local Marrickville area such as The Dinosaur Bones at Addison Road Childcare Centre, The Fallen Wall and a set of sculptures for Tillman Park Childcare Centre. In exchange for the use of the Stone Villa we give our time and expertise back to the local community through these community based projects. The Stone Villa Inc. currently consists of Mishka Borowski, Simon Cavanough, Geoff Corbett, Michelle Hanlin, Caz Haswell, Stephen Ralph, Nick Strike, Sam Whittingham, Sam Hughes, Corrie Ancone and Yoris Everaerts. Our previous artists in residence have been Craig Clough, Lisa Kelly, Jo Daniell, Simon Yates, Henry Mulholland, Kirsti Lenthall, Tristan Lanceley, Ben De Nardi, Justine Jackson, Adam Rish, Gria Shead, Melody Willis & Darren Whatley. Our current artist in residence is What.
